Ingredients

2 c. all-purpose flour

1/4 c. unsweetened cocoa powder

1 1/4 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. kosher salt

1/4 tsp. baking soda

1/2 c. (1 stick) butter, softened

1 c. granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 tbsp. red food coloring

1 tsp. pure vanilla extract

1/4 c. black cocoa powder

1/4 c. white sanding sugar

Preparation

Step 1Preheat oven to 350° and line 2 large baking sheets with parchment. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Step 2In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition, then add red food coloring and vanilla. Step 3In a small bowl, combine black cocoa powder and white sanding sugar. Step 4Roll about 1 tablespoon of dough into a ball, then roll in black cocoa powder. Repeat with remaining dough. Step 5Place dough on prepared baking sheets, about 1” apart. Bake until cookies have flattened and set in the middle, 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool on trays for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.
